The trouble with registration and fine detail

There’s only one way to obtain the advantages that foiling services can provide. You need to place your trust in a company that knows what it is doing. Our own business has been a part of this profession for years. During this time, many have come to regard us as one of the industry’s leaders.

Anyone who has worked in foiling will know about foil blocking. It’s similar to potato printing, only more refined. It makes use of a metal die that has the relevant design imprinted on it. You then heat the die and stamp it under pressure onto a colourful foil ribbon that is on top of your item. Your material ends up branded with a prepossessing finish.

Fluctuating registrations

Foil blocking demands that you apply pressure and heat. Consequently, your print’s registration could fluctuate by +1mm. Expect your foil area to advance around the page by as much as +1mm. You plan might be to cover a printed shape using a fine edge. If this is the case, the foil area must overlap the print edge by 1mm. This will allow for changes in the registration.

Aligning

Something you shouldn’t try with this technique is aligning fine detail. It isn’t suited to alignment with these kinds of details. An example of this would be shapes with thin lines. Avoid reversed-out lines that are thinner than 2 mm. Additionally, don’t work with positive lines thinner than 0.5mm. For the greatest results, don’t match your foiling to a pre-printed area. Act as if it is its own individual design component.
