How does foil provide protection against wildfires?

Protective foils are fantastic, able to preserve building materials, electronics, food, vehicles, and more. Surprisingly, they also have applications for protecting trees, homes, and historic assets from wildfires. We want to have a closer look at that here to showcase just how useful they are. Then, if you need foiling services for different projects, you can rely on us.

Serious issues

Foiling servicesWildfires have been a massive problem in various parts of the world for centuries. However, they are becoming more frequent due to rising temperatures and adverse weather such as heatwaves and droughts. They are also occurring in more locations, including areas where they are traditionally rarer. In fact, the estimate by the National Emergencies Trust is we’ll see a 14% increase globally by 2030.

Fighting wildfires can be incredibly challenging. They can spread very quickly, especially when it’s been dry and there is an abundance of fuel, such as forest and grassland. It can take days, weeks, or even months to get them under control. This can involve creating fire breaks, continuous watering, and other techniques to deprive the fire of fuel, cool the heat, and remove oxygen if possible.

Preservation

In a number of cases when there have been wildfires in different parts of the world, people have needed to act to preserve key assets. This can involve various things, including using protective foil. Crucially, the foils can reflect heat and create a barrier to block embers. It shows how incredible foiling services can be.

One of the most famous cases was in 2021. A wildfire at Sequoia National Park in Sierra Nevada, California, US, put ancient trees at risk. There were fears the fire would damage the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest tree by volume, and others in the grove. So, firefighters chose to wrap them in a protective foil. They also cleared the forest floor to provide a fire break. Luckily, the trees were safe and still stand to this day.

There was another famous case in 2024. This time there were multiple wildfires burning in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana, US. The fires raised concerns about the McCart Fire Lookout, a historic tower in the park. Dating back to 1939, it was vital for fire detection and emergency response for decades. While it is no longer in use for this, it had a full restoration in 1990 and is available for hikers to rent. It was wrapped in protective foil to preserve it.

Most recently, early in 2026 there were wildfires in the Woonangatta Valley in Victoria, Australia. It’s a wonderful part of the Alpine National Park. However, there was a risk the fires would damage iconic landmarks in the area, including two huts (Howitt Hut and Guys Hut) that are more than 100 years old. So, again protective foil was used to wrap them to preserve the key pieces of the area’s heritage.
