Christmas season is already here for many of us. Adverts are starting to pop up from supermarkets to get people interested in their seasonal products. Some channels are already showing Christmas movies, and there are even some at cinemas. Whether you want to get an early start or grumpily say it is too soon for all of that, we want to have a look at wrapping paper and how you can be more sustainable when you choose it. Then, if you want to learn about foiling services, you can speak to us.
Different types
The greatest thing about wrapping paper is it helps to hide the product underneath, making it a nicer surprise. It is also wonderful that there are so many different types. You can choose designs with a favourite character or theme. Or you can opt for colourful patterns. There are even various options for texture, from smooth and glossy to the roughness of real paper.
What you need to think about though is what to do with the paper and the impact on the environment. The last thing most people want is to have a black bag full of paper after Christmas that they have to throw in the bin. It would be better to choose products you can recycle to be greener.
Recycling
If you want to ensure the wrapping paper is recyclable, there are a couple of crucial things to look at. Firstly, if it is regular paper without any additional additives, you are fine to recycle it. So, grab all the scraps and put them in your household recycling bag or take them to a recycling facility.
You need to be more careful with wrapping paper if there are non-paper elements. If there is a plastic film coating, metallic flakes, or glitter, you may not be able to recycle. Keep in mind though that foiling services have come a very long way. There are some foils that are recyclable. Make sure you check the product label to see if you can recycle before you buy.
You may be asking why some foils are recyclable while others aren’t. It is a really good question. Generally it comes down to how easy it is to de-bond the materials. If they are simple to separate from the paper substrate, they are more recyclable. Some foils are so thin now that they don’t cause issues when recycling the paper, typically dissipating during the repulping.
Other non-recyclables
It is also worth keeping in mind that some other products people use with wrapping paper may not be recyclable either. Be careful when choosing things like tags, bows, and even ribbon, string, or twine. Ideally, you should select products you can recycle.
